Being a touring performer can be lonely. Sometimes I realize that I will go for 24 hours without ever speaking to another person. I am on planes, in airports, getting rental cars, checking into hotels, taking a nap, loading in and setting up. Then, seemingly magically, I am on a mic speaking for over an hour to hundreds of strangers and performing my show. Afterwards their is usually a few moments of pictures and high fives, followed again by an eerie silence as the room empties and I am left to pack out, head back to a hotel, clean up, sleep and then head back to the airport to do it all over again.
BUT
One of the nice things about traveling so much is that I now have friends and family all over the country that I am making an active point to try and connect with while I am away from home. My travel schedule is usually tight, but with forward thinking I can usually squeeze in a lunch or dinner with someone.
This week found me in Orlando Florida. I was scheduled for a late night show at UCF and my travel had me arriving in the morning. I called my cousin who just graduated from Texas Tech and moved out to Tampa for his first job out of college. I asked him if he would like to make the drive to Orlando and get some hang time, then come out to the show. He was stoked and made the trip. As he was driving to meet me around noon at my hotel, I realized that we could enjoy the time we had together driving around Orlando, or we could just jump in with both feet and go to Disney World!
I called up a friend who works for Disney, explained what I was looking to do and within 45 seconds got 2 comp tickets to get into all the parks. It was awesome. I called my cousin, who was stuck in Orlando traffic right next to Disney and told him to just park, I would meet him their shortly. I hauled ass to meet him and by 12:45 we were skipping through Disney World's EPCOT with childlike excitement. In 5 hours we were able to hit up Disney Springs, EPCOT, and Magic Kingdom, before we had to head back to the hotel, drop off is car and head to the venue for load in and sound check.
I can not stress how amazing the impromptu trip to Disney was. We had no stress for what we wanted to do. We had no agenda or map. We just walked around taking in the sights and sounds and street performances. We didn't have time to wait in lines for rides, so we got to explore the buildings and the vendors and really take in the park. I got to see people who were stressed with crying kids trying to drag them along so they could get to the next thing and have fun. Meanwhile they were missing out on the flowers and the birds and the beauty of the park.
I know that this kind of adventure is not the way most people would chose to do Disney, but it was a good reminder to me that you can't buy fun. Fun can be sitting home and making up a story. Fun can be having a light saber fight with Christmas wrapping tubes. Being at Disney doesn't guarantee fun. Being at Disney only gives you permission to let yourself have fun. I feel like in 5 hours we had more laughs and smiles and high fives than most people I saw there that day; many of whom were at the parks for days. My challenge to you is make sure you make joy a priority. YOU are the party. wherever you are at is the venue, and anyone can be on your guest list.

Check out my podcast!

Okay team. My friend and fellow touring magician, Pete Boie and I have started a podcast that we are both pretty proud of. Here is the thing, it is not for kids. It is designed to give everyone who is not on tour with us a way to hang out with us as we relax on our one day off. For us performers that tour colleges and do corporate shows, Mondays are usually our down day. Because of this, most weeks while others are going to work and hating Mondays, we are enjoying our free time at home.
If you would like to hang out with us and catch up on our shenanigans to make your Mondays a little easier, please take a minute to subscribe to the podcast. I hope you enjoy it half as much as I have enjoyed making these episodes. Thanks for supporting us in this experiment. We are both working on our writing, speaking and R.T.F. skills. If you would like to come with us on this adventure, then have a listen to Monday Club Podcast at wherever you get your podcasts. Have a great week!

TRYING NEW THINGS!
![]() |
BUT....
This stretch of time is different. It is the longest I have been off the road in a year. So after the first 3 days, I had done all my "to do" list and have been looking down the barrel of a very long break.
My wife is happy I get to be home and relax. After so much daily grind being on tour, it is great to be home and to put my feet up for a bit. I am just TERRIBLE at relaxing! I love what I do for a living and play as hard as I work when I am on the road. So being home and not having anything to do has had its mental challenges. As a New Year's resolution, I told myself that I would try new things this year. I wanted to challenge myself to break out of my comfort zone and really get out of my own ruts. I crushed that goal this past week! Friday, Saturday and Sunday were spent going to see my wife's Improv shows at the Hideout theater here in Austin Texas. After the shows we went and hung out at cast parties and with her friends she has cultivated in my absences while I have been on tour. As social as I am on the road, it is a different feeling being introduced to so many people who have heard about me, but never seen me before.
Sunday, my wife's duo improv partner had to back out on her and she asked me to get on stage and do a 30 minute show with her. I must say that it is a much different performing experience to get on stage and not have any lines or bits to fall back on. I am used to saying my first lines in my head before I walk out on stage. To not have any, just get out there and start talking is kind of like showing up to do a book report where you haven't even seen the movie, only talked about it with your friends 10 minutes before class. We had a blast though, and apparently I didn't let her down, because she was really happy we got to perform together and wants to do it again. Yay!
Monday, my friend Peter Boie and I launched our podcast called Monday Club. You can check it out at this link (mondayclubpodcast.com) I am really excited about doing this project because I am learning so much about recording, story boarding, broadcasting and opening myself up in a new way. We have a handful of episodes in the bag and I feel like the episodes are getting better and better the more we find our groove.
I also have started to TRY and play the guitar. I don't know how I missed it as a kid, but I never learned an instrument. I got a solid D chord down already so look out billboard top 10000 :). We will see about the rest, but it does feel really good to challenge my brain and body to something all new. It reminds me of learning to juggle. I remember seeing others do it and thinking to myself, "See! It's possible!" My fingers don't yet agree, but my brain knows I can do it.
Yesterday, I spent the day with my best friend from High School. First of all, we only see each other once or twice a year. Mostly because of our very opposite schedules and the fact that he lives about an hour away, it's just tough to make the time. That being said, we both made the time to have a full day of hanging out together. We started off by going to play golf. I only get to play golf once or twice a year, which isn't nearly enough to get good, but I am just good enough to have a good time and not lose too many balls. Yesterday I had a great golf game! I even got a few legit birdies and pars. Most importantly, it was a beautiful day outside and we had a great time reconnecting and laughing. After golf, we went back to his house that sits on 5 acres of land and rode his two new dirt bikes. Let me say that I have gone through the training to get a motorcycle license... about 15 years ago. It has been about that long since I've been on a motorbike. But I guess that saying, "you never forget how to ride a bike" is true, because after a few stalls to get it going in first gear, I was tearing off and riding around like a boss! I ALMOST backed out of riding when he suggested it. I was thinking of all the reasons why I shouldn't get on a motorcycle after not having ridden in so long. I am so glad I didn't listen to myself and just jumped on. I know this sounds sappy, but there is a lesson in doing something slightly dangerous and overcoming it. I wasn't doing jumps or racing on the highway, I was pretty much in 2nd or 3rd gear the whole time. Logically, if I did need to bail off the bike I would most likely have been okay. What I was doing is getting over that nagging voice that says, "this is dangerous" and instead listening to that voice that says, "you can do this!". Memories and confidence are made by listening to that second voice. Don't be stupid, but don't forget that you are a strong and powerful person either.
Like I said, this week has been full of opening myself up to new experiences. With one more week to go of being home, we will see where life takes me. Today however, I am going to be sitting in my living room playing some video games. After all that golf and dirt biking, I am icing my ankle and staying in. Thanks for reading! :)

5 traveling tips and secrets
How to travel like a BOSS
I'm on the road about 250 days a year. I am in trucks, RV'a, rental cars, airplanes, hotels, taxis (well Ubers; I hate taxis) and trains ALL THE TIME! I've been touring this country and others since 2003 and have some easy tips to make your travel life SO MUCH EASIER!
If you are flying for the first time or planning a trip with your family I promise these tips will not lead you astray, but will make your traveling experience so much better. Trust me. I'm a Game Show Host. :-)
Step one: This is the most important step. It's also the hardest, so let's just get this out of the way. You HAVE TO RELAX AND NOT BE STRESSED.
Seriously. So many people show up to the airport or to the hotel STRESSED OUT! I've seen tears from grown men and women, fist fights, cussing matches and marriages end. I am not exaggerating any of those examples. Here is the real secret. No matter how crappy the airport or the hotel, they are designed to get you what you want. Some do it WAY better than others, but even the worst has signs and built in procedures to help you get what you want. Breathe. Don't get flustered. Give yourself permission to be on the adventure and out of your daily surroundings. I promise it will make all the difference in the world to your trip.
Step 2: Be early!
This one hurts when I have a 6am flight and make myself get to the airport at 4am. But here's the deal, it ties back into rule #1. You can't think when you're stressed and you can't be calm when you are wishing the elderly lady in front of you would spontaniously catch fire so you could roll your bag over her slow smoldering corpse. It also lets you figure things out without sweating it. Things always seem to take longer when you are pressed for time. Take control of your time, don't let the stress of the airport control you. Being early is all part of the game.
Step 3: Travel light.
Baggage leads to extra work. Extra work leads to stress. Stress breaks rule #1. Breaking rule # 1 leads to the Dark Side. When traveling with my full show, I once had to take 4 large luggage bags out of the hotel to the rental car. Rental car return to bus to off site return. Off site return on bus to airport. Airport to baggage drop off. It took me over an hour and I was stressed and soaked in sweat. It was aweful! Traveling as light as you can cuts that stress WAY down. It makes you more mobile and gives you more options when you are in airports, rental cars and hotels.
Step 4: Sign up for rental car rewards and express programs.
Do it now. I will wait.
No rental car company is great. I've had good and bad expieeiences with all of them. BUT here is the secret. If you sign up for the express programs that they all offer you can skip the line! Rental car lines can take HOURS, plural! From start to finish if you haven't pre booked is a 20 minute up-sale and pressure by fear interaction. It's aweful. The express programs allow you to enter all your information and wishes in ahead of time and walk around the line (or have your own line), get your keys and get outta there!
Step 5: Control your environment.
When you travel, you trade your home environment for one you are unfamiliar with. You are taken out of your routine. Here is what I can't live without on the road. Earplugs, Bose noise cancelling headphones, a travel power strip, my kindle for books, a bottle of water, and a napkin/small towel. So equipped, I am just fine sitting next to crying babies, or waiting in any line with all I need.
I'm sure there will be more specific tips on travel that I will be posting, but if you follow these rules you are sure to get to your destination much more relaxed. Hope you enjoyed!

day 2
So... This is one of my first ever magical performances circa 1993/94. It was for a summer camp end of camp review show. That's me gleefully shoving sharped dowels into a box while my friend is "magically" avoiding being punctured to death. I can't believe the journey this joy of magic and performing has taken me on. I've gotten a LOT better since this show, but my glee of being on stage is still the exact same. My sincere hope new reader is that you have something in your life that you do that makes you truly happy.

I am sitting in a Starbucks in Austin Texas, creating my new website. I am blogging and sipping a $6.17 latte. I hope to make posts / videos / and share my adventures as I travel the US performing shows. This has been the busiest year for me in my life and I am so fortunate to be doing what I love. I couldn't do it otherwise. I hope any who read this will enjoy the adventure with me and join me as a friend. More soon!
